Minor league update 7-20-09

From Jamie Ramsey:

DURHAM 6, LOUISVILLE 7 (13 INNINGS):
As if 16 innings didn’t provide enough baseball for these two teams
Saturday night, they decided to go 13 innings yesterday…It’s no
wonder that after 29 innings and nearly 8 1/2 hours of baseball over
the last 2 games, Bats Director of Media Relations Megan Dimond is
taking tonight off…In a collision at home plate in the bottom of the
13th, 1b Wes Bankston scored the winning run from second
base…Infielders Mike Griffin 1ip, 1bb, 1hb, 2k) and Luis Bolivar
(1ip, 1h, 1k) pitched, with Bolivar earning the victory…DH Kevin
Barker belted his 2nd homer in as many days (#17)…SS Chris Valaika
went 2-for-5 with 2 RBI…RHP Kip Wells allowed 4 runs in 4.2 innings.

CHATTANOOGA 1, CAROLINA 6:
LHP Travis Wood (9-3) continues his outstanding season, he scattered 4
hits over 7.0 shutout innings (0bb, 1hb, 8k)…he’s so good on the
mound these days that boredom is beginning to set in and he’s focusing
on his hitting – he went 1-for-2 at the plate with a 2-run single (he’s
batting .241 this season with 2 doubles and 4 RBI)…The Shovelheads
scored 6 runs total on 10 hits…LF Carson Kainer went 3-for-4 with 2
RBI…RF Stephen Chapman added a pair of hits and 2 runs scored
(double, 1bb)…2b Todd Frazier (.314) collected his 48th and 49th RBI.

SARASOTA 0, CLEARWATER 4:
LHP Jeremy Horst (5-10) gave up 3 runs on 8 hits in 5.0 innings to
suffer the loss (1bb, 4k, 1hr)…the SaraReds were blanked on 5
hits…1b Neftali Soto and C Jake Long had 2 hits apiece.

BELOIT 4, DAYTON 6:
The Dragons scored all 6 of their runs on 6 straight extra-base hits in
the third inning…DH Tony “Downtown” Brown belted a 2-run homer onto
the roof of the Huffy Bicycles plant…CF Josh Fellhauer (7th rounder)
also homered and has now hit safely in 11 consecutive games (17-44,
.386)…1b Carlos Mendez tripled, doubled, drove in a run and scored a
run…LHP Matt Fairel (7-5) collected his 11th quality start of the
season, giving up a run on 5 hits in 6.0 innings (1bb, 7k, 1hr)…RHP
Mark Serrano (6th rounder) fired 2.0 scoreless innings of relief (2h,
1bb, 3k).

OGDEN 5, BILLINGS 4:
Down 5 runs early, the Mustangs nearly rallied back to tie
it…Billings had gone 12 games without a home run until RF Sean Conner
belted 2 of them last night (3rbi)…LF Josh Garton (12th rounder) also
hit one over the fence (#2)…LHP Justin Walker (0-3) started for the
Ponies and allowed 5 runs (4er) on 7 hits in 4.1 innings (2bb, 3k,
3hr)…RHP Blair Carson (42nd rounder) fired 3.2 scoreless innings of
relief (1h, 1k)…SS Mariekson Gregorius went 0-for-3, ending his
13-game hitting streak.

GCL REDS 3, GCL RED SOX 0:
The Reds blanked the Red Sox on just 2 hits…RHP Tyler Cline (2-0) was
outstanding in his 6.0 innings, allowing just 1 hit and 1 walk while
fanning 6…RHP Jesus Adames (2ip, 2bb, 1k) and RHP Jacob Wiley (Sv,
1ip, 1h) preserved the shutout…LF Theodis Bowe paced the offense with
2 hits and a run scored.

WOOD IS REALLY GOOD: LHP
Travis Wood (Carolina) last night vs Chattanooga set a franchise record
by winning his 9th consecutive decision (7ip, 4h, 0r, 0bb, 8k)…he
hasn’t allowed a run since the 2nd inning of the 7/3 game at
Chattanooga – a span of 18 consecutive scoreless frames…14 of his 19
outings this year have been quality starts, including each of his last
5…he leads the Southern League with 9 wins, 103 strikeouts, 119.0
innings pitched and a microscopic 1.21 ERA (next best is 2.70)…his
ERA is the best in all of the full-season minor leagues.

QUOTE BOAT: “It
feels great.  I haven’t pitched in a while.  I didn’t feel pressure at
all.” – Louisville IF Luis Bolivar, who hadn’t pitched since he was 13
until last night’s 13-inning victory over Durham.  He was credited with
the victory.  Teammate and fellow infielder Mike Griffin also pitched.
